In Central Florida, one Popular Community Bank employee is working to help the next generation make college a reality.
Annette Perez, the branch manager of our Whisper Lakes (FL) branch, is a member of the selection committee for the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund of Metro Orlando. The Fund works with Hispanic students from low to moderate income households who volunteer in the Central Florida community while maintaining a high grade point average. Since its inception in 2000, the Fund has awarded more than $744,500 in scholarships to 195 students in Central Florida.
Perez has worked with the Fund for a number of years, but this is her first on the committee. According to Perez, there were approximately 500 applications submitted this year from which the selection committee chose 20 students to receive financial aid. In her role as a member of the committee, Perez reads essays, confirms GPAs and volunteer activities, and reads recommendation letters submitted by each student.
On Aug. 16, the Fund will host a press conference to honor the scholarship recipients for the 2012-13 school year. And on Oct. 20, there will be an awards gala at the Coronado Springs Conference Center at Disney World in Orlando to honor the recipients and their families.
