Thousands of children live with their families in the New York City homeless shelter system and many of them return to school without the supplies they need. From day one, they look and feel different from their classmates. In fact, one of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it has on a child’s education. Operation Backpack helps close this gap.
We have teamed up with Volunteers of America- Greater New York to collect 20,000 backpacks for every child living in a shelter, but we need your help. To join this collective effort, please stop by your local Popular Community Bank to drop-off a brand new backpack by August 10th. Keep in mind, you are welcome to donate a filled backpack specifically for one of the following grade levels:
- Pre K-K
- 1st -4th
- 5th -8th
- 9th – 12th
Grade-specific supply lists will be available at your local PCB and online at OperationBackpack-NYC.org. You can also print a Kid-Friendly Shopping List here: Backpack Shopping List.
*Please note: All backpacks and supplies must be collected by sort week (August 10-21st), this is when the backpacks and supplies are sorted and prepped for distribution amongst the shelters.*
We thank you in advance for your generous contributions to Operation Backpack 2015!
